Chako Hananoki ends her engagement after realizing the relationship would demand her complete self-sacrifice. Returning to her rural hometown, she discovers two unfamiliar people living in her childhood home. She manages to adjust to the situation, but her ex-fiancé, who has been following her, shows up. In a moment of desperation, Chako announces to him—and unintentionally to the entire village—that the man now living with her is her husband.
