A 21-year-old man named Legare Salviatti resides in Venice during the Italian Renaissance with his father, Georg, a former Florentine who now lives apart from his wife and practices as a modest herbalist. Legare spends his time engaging in art, music, and courtship, while his real interest lies in alchemy. His tranquil existence is disrupted when Georg is taken into custody, accused of black magic. In an effort to prevent his father's execution, Legare seeks assistance from a priest, only to discover that the political landscape is complex and deceptive.
