A long-standing presence in the town are the spirits of darkness, which inhabit the shadows and collect human souls to fuel their flames. These spirits are feared because they silently take souls from people without being noticed. The flames they carry, known as "lamps of darkness," are made from the souls they collect. It is warned that individuals must not let go of their own lamp or approach the darkness, as doing so risks having their soul taken. Many souls have already been used to sustain the spirits' flames.
