The series draws from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, centering on the character of Randolph Carter, who appears in several of Lovecraft's stories. Kadokawa has indicated that Carter's portrayal is inspired by Lovecraft himself. The adaptation includes an additional chapter beyond the original material.
