Jaime is left without family after his grandmother's death, and Percy is also alone. When Jaime moves to a new area, Percy follows, though Jaime is unaware of his presence. Their lives become more connected than either realizes. They meet Jessica, a writer of erotic thrillers who owns three cats, and Noland, a former coworker of Jaime’s who has disappeared from his previous life. After encountering Jessica’s cats, Percy discovers he can understand Yumyum, the language of Yummies, also known as hoomans.
