Midgard no Shugosha: Re-Birth of Norse Mythology

A war rages between the Jotunn and the Aesir, two divine races, over control of Midgard, the human world. Humans are powerless against the gods' Megin abilities. The Jotunn seek to conquer Midgard as a stepping stone to attack the Aesir, killing many in the process. The Aesir intervene to defend humans from Jotunn attacks. Thor, an Aesir, resides in a town where a boy named Soah lives. Soah lost his parents to a Jotunn attack and admires Thor, hoping to one day fight Jotunn. The two develop a friendly bond. During an invasion, a Jotunn uses Soah as a shield, and Thor sacrifices himself to save the town, killing Soah in the process. Thor, unwilling to let Soah die, gives him his Megin before disappearing. After training, Soah gains strength and begins fighting Jotunn in Thor’s place.
