Two painters, separated by time and shaped by very different lives, take up their brushes as this story opens. Each runs into obstacles that stand between them and the canvas, and each must find a way through in order to see the work finished. Completing the painting is the only duty either of them recognizes, and the deepest pleasure either of them knows.
