A boy named Kanomiya Tsukuru has had a unique ability since childhood: he can see misfortunes as black mist and purify them. He keeps this ability hidden for most of his life. On his first day at high school, he encounters a girl named Arisu Howl, who is overwhelmed by the mist. Attracted to her and concerned about her fate, Kanomiya begins following her, leading to a supernatural and action-filled school experience.
