An adaptation of a classic novel by Guy de Maupassant, it is set in 19th-century France. Jeanne, a 20-year-old daughter of a baron, leaves a convent to live with her family in Les Peuples. She meets and marries a young viscount, initially appearing to live a life of fantasy. However, reality gradually intrudes with its harshness. The story questions whether her marriage was a misstep.
