Kumada lives in a poor area of Osaka, caring for his wife and two young children. He is large, scarred, and works hard while drinking heavily. Though he rarely speaks, he is fiercely devoted to his family. When a yakuza group sets their home on fire to aid a real estate deal, Kumada kills those responsible and is imprisoned. After fifteen years, he is released and seeks out his family. His children, unaware of his absence, are wary of him. He aims to take charge of their upbringing, beginning with his son, who has been mistreated by local toughs.
