A teacher named Chizuru travels from Japan to San Francisco in the early 1900s to marry a man she has never met, based only on a photograph. Her husband, Yoshiaki, is described as living in a society that values freedom and equality, and is said to respect women. Expecting a compatible partner, Chizuru is surprised to find that the man she meets in America is very different from the one she imagined. Despite their initial differences and the distance from their homeland, the two gradually develop feelings for each other.
