In 18th-century France, King Louis XV, known for his appearance and numerous mistresses, had one official mistress who held authority nearly equal to the queen. Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, a woman from a non-royal background, aspired to be his chosen mistress. She attempted to gain his attention during a hunting trip in the forest. She succeeded in catching the king’s interest, which led to tension with the current mistress, the duchess of Chateauroux, who felt threatened by Jeanne’s rise.
