To combat the threat known as "mad spirits," magic was developed. Masou Academy is a university town dedicated to training those who master it, along with the elite weapon Exmachina, also known as the Spirit Machine. Kazuha, a boy who strongly desires power despite being unable to use magic, once left this place and has now returned. Through a special ritual, he gains the ability to wield a magical weapon, driven by his desire to help his childhood friend, Kikyo. However, the weapon created for him unexpectedly takes the form of a girl.
