February has arrived without a single snowfall. Kanon's father frequently travels for work and appears to be growing close to a young female coworker, a situation Kanon finds unsettling given the recent loss of her mother. Her younger sibling has a hobby of collecting insects, but they are dying one by one. This marks the beginning of a larger issue. Initially, insects are found dead for no clear reason. Next, rats begin searching for new sources of food. The situation continues to deteriorate from there.
