In a future where robots have taken over many human jobs, a man named Sakuya runs a junk and salvage shop and harbors a strong dislike for machines he believes have stolen work from people. He visits a destroyed research site to scavenge parts and instead discovers a robot buried in the rubble. The robot, which looks remarkably human, has no memory or function. Moved by its confusion and distress, Sakuya tells it to choose its own path. The robot, calling itself Haku, decides to assist Sakuya and accompany him.
