An orphaned girl from a once-noble English family in the 18th century forms a bond with a young man believed to be the illegitimate son of a noble. Following an event that changes their lives, she takes on his identity to attend a boys' academy for the nobility. Though such a school might appear ideal to others, it conceals a level of cruelty and severity she has not anticipated.
