A wealthy Japanese family relocates to Shanghai in 1936 as tensions between Japan and China escalate. Haru, a young girl, begins to encounter a new and unwelcoming culture. She eventually meets a Chinese boy who becomes her first and only friend. Through him, she gradually grows more accepting of the country and its people. However, the looming threat of war remains.
