Arima has won every piano competition he has entered since beginning to play. His performances are known for their flawless execution. At the age of eleven, however, he experiences a sudden and unexpected failure on stage, leaving his hands unable to play. The story examines the impact of this event through the viewpoints of his friends and competitors, following his slow and difficult attempts to recover as he grows into adolescence.
