Each person is linked to a protective spirit whose actions directly affect their host. For example, if one spirit develops feelings for another, their hosts will experience the same emotions. Karin's spirit, Hiriji, is responsible for his lack of friends. After a minor accident, Karin is assisted by his teacher, Takatsugu, whose spirit is Nagi. Takatsugu works as the school nurse and can perceive and interact with protective spirits. Both he and Nagi were known for their flirtatious behavior until they encountered Karin and Hiriji.
