A rise in murders has led the Japanese government to reinstate a historical punishment system from the Meiji era known as "Death by Retaliation," which mandates that criminals be executed in the manner that caused their victims' deaths. A specialized police unit employs nine individuals called Assistors, who are themselves survivors of crimes, to perform these executions with dedication and conviction.
