A teenage girl from abroad, Elizabeth Whitehead, has a terminal illness and enjoys air racing. She travels to Japan to seek help from Aramaki, a renowned craftsman known for building jet engines. Aramaki has ceased his work in this field due to lingering guilt over his role in World War II. After learning about Elizabeth's condition, he agrees to assist her despite his personal reservations.
