Elisha serves as Archmage of the Cardion Empire and is betrothed to Emperor Erich, a man fond of declaring he would sooner die than marry her. Then, without warning, she disappears, leaving behind nothing but a letter addressed to her fiance, in which she explains she is keeping a promise. She had assumed Erich would simply let her go and not bother searching. Instead, he sets out at once to track her down, resolved to find her wherever she has gone, inside the Empire or beyond its borders, and bring her back so the two of them can settle on a new promise together.
