Six short stories center on student relationships. In one, a boy believes he can win his best friend’s affection by defeating him in judo. Another follows a baseball enthusiast drawn to the scent of his tutor. A third explores tensions between an emperor, his minister, and the memory of a lost lover. Two additional tales involve a wealthy student attending a regular high school and his efforts to bond with a new friend.
