An orphan named Sarah ends her relationship with a guardian she has never met and sets out on a journey. In 19th-century England, an unmarried woman cannot travel alone, so she poses as a widow. She stays at an inn where she meets Marcus Ravenhurst, her actual guardian, who is searching for her. Sarah attempts to conceal her true self, while Marcus watches over her and becomes captivated by her youthful purity.
