Steam locomotives now obscure the cities, marking the decline of mercenaries in the age of the transcontinental railroad. Sword, a struggling mercenary, takes a job from Verderon, a successful female novelist, and they travel to a perilous, unexplored mountain. Their journey becomes entangled in a scheme involving the church and government.
