He debuted in the alternative manga journal Yagyo in 1973. Since the beginning, his work has been characterized by splintered drawing and melancholic themes inspired in part by Garo stalwarts Tsuge Yoshiharu and Hayashi Seiichi. In addition to manga, Kanno has been active as a poster and book cover designer. The famed jazz ensemble, the Yamashita Yosuke Trio, is amongst his clients.
