Hadashi no Gen

In 1945, three years into the war with the United States, a young boy named Gen lives in Hiroshima, a city that has so far avoided the bombings affecting other Japanese cities. Life is difficult, with food shortages causing serious malnutrition, especially threatening his pregnant mother's health. Gen and his younger brother assist their parents with daily tasks to help the family endure the hardships. Unaware of the impending danger, their lives are upended on August 6th, 1945, when the United States delivers a devastating surprise to Hiroshima.
