Each day in Japan, 2500 individuals pass away for various reasons. Most believe they won't be among them, while some hope for unexpected fortune. Sumida, however, desires stability above all—living a routine life, holding a standard job, raising typical children, and avoiding extremes of luck or misfortune. He sees those who reject this as misguided, destined to struggle endlessly without success. When his father is expelled from their home, Sumida remains unaffected. His mother's departure to be with her partner also doesn't shake him. Yet, as he begins to feel he is no longer ordinary, he seeks to give his life meaning in the only way he understands. Voices from within trouble him, which he attempts to disregard.
