He went on to Takushoku University from Sapporo Second Middle School and enlisted in Manchuria 1157th Unit (Xinjing) in June 1941. In December of the same year, he was transferred to Harbin. In March 1942, he was assigned to the 78th Air Squadron and detached to Akeno Army Flying School to train as a fighter pilot. In February 1943, he was assigned to the 103rd Independent Air Squadron. He fought in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and the Philippines. In April 1945, he was captured by the US military and demobilized in September 1947.
