A conflict involving Mages and Heroic Spirits took place in the town of Fuyuki during a previous Holy Grail War. During World War II, one Mage seized the Holy Grail amid the chaos. Decades later, the Yggdmillennia family, who adopted the Holy Grail as their emblem, broke away from the Mages' Association. In response, the Association deployed forces against them, but these efforts failed. Modifications to the Holy Grail system led to a war of immense scale.
