Three episodes from the "Astro Boy" television series were adapted for a theatrical re-release: "Robot Rocket," "Earth Defense Troops," and "The Last Day of Earth." Among these, "Earth Defense Troops" originated from a story by Osamu Tezuka titled "Number 7," later integrated into the "Astro Boy" series. For the film, scenes from "Earth Defense Troops" and portions of "The Last Day of Earth" were reimagined in color for the theater version.
