A prolonged conflict between humans and the Gamilon has left Earth damaged and its atmosphere contaminated by radioactive asteroids. Queen Starsha of Iscandar provides a solution to Earth's crisis by offering a device capable of eliminating the radiation. To transport the device, the space battleship Yamato is constructed from the remnants of its historical predecessor and embarks on a 148,000 light-year mission. The crew must complete the round trip within one Earth year to prevent the extinction of the human race.
