A boy named Kousei awakens in a hospital after losing his mother, father, and younger sister in a fire. He is placed in a pediatric ward with other boys his age. Meanwhile, Professor Kimishiro, a teacher admired by students but resented by university officials, is forced out of his position due to internal politics. He travels to the Amazon with a group to search for medicinal discoveries and a way to restore his standing. Instead of finding cures, they discover an ancient temple that local guides refer to as "The House of the God of the Black Death." The story explores the temple's mysteries and the danger it poses to those who enter.
