Yu-yu is a 15-year-old student in Kanazawa, Kaga Province, who can sense others' emotions but struggles to refuse their requests. After becoming overwhelmed by his sister's hobby, he flees home and is helped by Megumi Okura. She takes him to "Wonder Hill," a nighttime amusement park where her group, "Team Blackout," gathers to play Vanguard. There, Yu-yu meets Megumi, Zakusa Ishikame, and Tomari Seto. A significant match for the team's flag is about to occur between leader Danji Momoyama and the enigmatic Tohya Ebata. As Yu-yu watches, the card battle transforms into a vivid visual experience, introducing him to the unfamiliar world of Vanguard. Drawn to its appeal, he begins to make new friends.
