During the Meiji Restoration, ninja were dispersed throughout Japan and eventually faded from public view as their bloodlines weakened by intermarriage with other clans. To preserve their heritage, descendants of these ninja established the WNA. The organization developed Ninja-Gum, a technique capable of channeling the power of the Shinobi. However, producing the most potent Ninja-Gum requires strong ninja DNA. To identify the most powerful ninja, the WNA organized the Ninjala Tournament.
