Kawaguchi started by self-publishing his own novels on his website in 2004. The novels started gaining attention and he made his serialization debut in 2006 with Nijiiro Hotaru: Eien no Natsuyasumi, which received an [anime film adaptation](https://anilist.co/anime/6219/) in 2012.
