He was born in Nagano, but was raised in Kanazawa. He graduated from Nihon University's College of Art. Matsuyama was known for his work on television shows, movies, and commercials. He composed the music and arranged the theme songs for the original [Mobile Suit Gundam](https://anilist.co/anime/80/Mobile-Suit-Gundam/) series alongside [Takeo Watanabe](https://anilist.co/staff/106839/Takeo-Watanabe). He also returned to the franchise in more recent times to compose insert songs for [Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin](https://anilist.co/anime/10937/Mobile-Suit-Gundam-The-Origin/). On April 7, 2017, He passed away tragically due to burns sustained in a house fire in Nerima, Tokyo. The fire broke out at Matsuyama's two-story residence at around 4:30 p.m. on Friday and burned about 10 square meters of a second-floor Japanese-style room. Matsuyama was rescued from the room, but he had sustained burns. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
