Hideo Ogata was a planner, producer and the founding editor of Animage magazine.
He served as the editor on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, an influential manga series created by Hayao Miyazaki, which serialized on Animage from 1982 to 1994. He was also one of the planners of the series' film adaptation. In 1985, he was involved in the establishment of Studio Ghibli and contributed to its development by producing many of their films throughout the years. Some of his producer works outside of Ghibli movies include The Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Nightsong of Splendor.
Ogata passed away from stomach cancer on January 25, 2007. The eulogy at his funeral was read by Miyazaki.
