Started as a kashihon mangaka in 1952. In 1955, Osamu Tezuka recommended him to Shueisha and he made his debut in Omoshiro Book (which later became Monthly Shounen Jump). In 1956, he formed a coterie group with Fujio Akatsuka, Shinji Nagashima and Shotaro Ishinomori. From 1971 to 1991 he was one of the teachers of Bessatsu Margaret Shoujo Manga School, teaching shoujo manga artists such as Shinji Wada, Mineko Yamada, Jun Ichikawa and Fusako Kuramochi. He also involved in selecting submitted works for the first issue of Hana to Yume.

ISHIKAWA Kyuuta was one of his assistants.
