In 2015, the game "The World" was destroyed, and in 2016, CC Corporation released a rebuilt version called "The World R:2" using data from a different game. A new player named Haseo is quickly PKed and revived by a man named Ovan. As PKing becomes a major issue in the game, Haseo meets a female Harvest player named Shino, who assists him. Drawn by uncertainty and questions, Haseo joins the Twilight Brigade, a guild searching for the "Key of the Twilight." This takes place before the events of the .hack//G.U. game.
