Hayashi started to draw for the magazine Garo in 1967, and soon made his breakthrough with the manga [Red Colored Elegy](https://anilist.co/manga/39138/) about the break-up of an unmarried couple. The singer Morio Agata named a popular song of his after the manga. It also received [an animated adaptation](https://anilist.co/anime/6268/) 37 years after its release. [Hayao Miyazaki](https://anilist.co/staff/96870/) names Hayashi as an influence on his work.
