In 2020, the Network is essential to daily life, though people are unaware of the Digital World and the Digimon that inhabit it. Network disruptions occur, particularly in Tokyo, with traffic signals malfunctioning and public displays showing corrupted text. A fifth grader named Taichi Yagami is at home preparing for a summer camp when his mother and younger sister, Hikari, board a train that suddenly goes out of control. Taichi rushes to Shibuya to rescue them but experiences a strange occurrence as he reaches the station. He is transported to the Digital World, where he meets a partner Digimon and joins a group of others on an uncertain journey.
