Thunder and fire have caused destruction, and rumors circulate about sinister, rat-faced soldiers causing chaos in the imperial capital. Clues suggest these events are connected to secrets from a previous dynasty erased by the same forces. Jing Yifei, a cold and proud leader of the Jinwu Guard, is tasked with uncovering the truth behind the soldiers. Bai Qi, a reclusive descendant of Jieyi, brings his master down from the mountains to find a young mechanical expert to join the guard. However, the person they seek, Qin Ming, turns out to be misleading and captures them. As the three collaborate, they slowly uncover more about the mystery of Lei Huo.
