In the year Universal Century 0079, over 90 million people inhabit Earth, with many residing in space-based colony clusters known as Sides, governed by the Earth Federation Space Force. Side 3, a group of colonies near the moon's dark side, declares independence as the Principality of Zeon. An eight-month conflict between Zeon and the Federation has led to a stalemate. To counter Zeon's forces, the Federation develops the White Base and a new Mobile Suit named the Gundam. These advanced units are operated by young pilots.
