A film adaptation of a novel by Okamoto Kidou, it is inspired by a legend tied to a barren area at the base of Mt. Chausu, an active volcano in Tochigi Prefecture. The site has been known since the Heian period to emit toxic gases, including hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and arsenic, which have led to the deaths of both animals and humans. The legend tells of a kitsune from ancient China who turned into a beautiful woman, seduced the emperor, and brought misfortune to the kingdom. After fleeing to Japan, she took the form of a woman named Tamamo, again seduced the emperor, and was eventually exposed and killed. In death, she cursed her killers and transformed into a toxic stone known as Sesshoseki at that location.
