Liaozhai: Lanre Si

A scholar named Pu Songling spends a night at Lanruo Temple, where he is captured by two creatures, Toad and Turtle, and taken to the bottom of an ancient well to assess his storytelling skills. Within the temple, the well, and a tree, several chapters from a collection of classic tales are reenacted, including "The Taoist Priest of Mount Laoshan," "Lotus Princess," "Nie Xiaoqian," "Painted Skin," and "Lady Lu." These stories, presented in six different styles, showcase a range of bizarre, emotional, and fate-driven narratives.
