A young boy embarks on a journey to find the Water of Life, which is believed to bring happiness to his village. Along the way, he encounters gods and demons. He learns that an evil snake has taken the Water and makes his way to the snake's palace. The task is difficult because the Water allows the snake to heal itself. The boy, known as Maegami Tarou, continues his journey with the help of various creatures and divine beings.
