Shrine maidens who use swords have long been responsible for exorcising "aratama," entities that pose a threat to the human world. These young women, known as "Toji," wear school uniforms and carry swords. They function as part of the police force in a specialized unit called the "special religious service police squad." The government officially permits the Toji to carry swords and serves as their employer. Across the country, five schools have been established for training these shrine maidens. Each spring, the top Toji from each school participate in a national tournament. As the competition approaches, the selected representatives intensively train to enhance their strength and abilities.
