A six-year-old boy named Abe is working for the Peyton family because his mother is unwell. After some children tease him and shatter a bottle of medicine he had just purchased for her, a young woman intervenes. Recognizing that Abe cannot afford to replace the medicine, she offers him one of her earrings. He attempts to return it, stating he cannot accept a gift from someone he does not know. She replies that she knows him and claims they have met previously.
