Despite this, he has no girlfriend, as he is occupied with school, part-time work, and helping his juniors deal with bullies. To escape, he logs onto the chat service "F.I.L. GATES," where he uses the name Kakeru. There, he has developed a close relationship with a user named Hal. Hal reminds him that six months have passed since they first connected online and expresses a desire to meet in person. Their planned meeting is described as being unlike a typical first date.
